Our client is a global leader in advanced steel manufacturing and operates a highly automated, state-of-the-art facility in Calvert, Alabama. The site is continuously investing in new technology, equipment, and process improvements to support safe, efficient, and sustainable manufacturing.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Reliability Engineer to join the Hot Strip Mill team and provide hands-on mechanical engineering and reliability support. This individual will work closely with Maintenance, Production, Technicians, and Contractors to improve equipment reliability, reduce downtime, and drive continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide mechanical maintenance engineering and reliability support to the Maintenance team.
  • Lead and facilitate Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) investigations involving equipment failures and major breakdowns.
  • Identify and implement solutions to recurring equipment failures and unplanned downtime.
  • Troubleshoot critical mechanical equipment and provide technical support during breakdowns and maintenance activities.
  • Develop and maintain technically based Equipment Maintenance Plans.
  • Analyze equipment data, maintenance strategies, and performance trends to improve reliability and availability.
  • Track and trend equipment maintenance and reliability performance.
  • Participate in critical equipment inspections and analyze inspection findings.
  • Review mechanical drawings, equipment specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Develop and implement maintenance and reliability standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Prepare and present technical reports, findings, recommendations, and equipment performance trends.
  • Participate in daily Maintenance and Production meetings and technical briefings.
  • Analyze equipment cost, availability, reliability, and quality metrics.
  • Provide technical leadership and support to Maintenance Technicians during critical work and special projects.
  • Lead and support equipment improvement initiatives focused on safety, reliability, maintainability, and performance.
  • Support capital improvement projects, equipment modifications, and technical evaluations.
  • Assist with accident and incident investigations as needed.
  • Support management initiatives focused on optimizing equipment quality, cost, availability, and performance.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to a safe and healthy work environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • 5+ years of engineering experience in a heavy industrial environment.
  • Experience with Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) practices.
  • Familiarity with:
    • Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA)
    • Cause Mapping
    • Kaizen
    • Continuous Improvement and problem-solving methodologies
  • Experience supporting maintenance and reliability activities for heavy industrial equipment.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
  • Strong technical writing, reporting, data analysis, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.

Technical Experience

Strong mechanical knowledge in several of the following areas:

  • Mechanical power transmission systems
  • Gearboxes and drive systems
  • Drive shafts
  • Bearings and couplings
  • Rollers and conveyors
  • Hydraulic systems
  • Hydraulic cylinders and servo valves
  • Accumulators and piping systems
  • Hose connections and filtration systems
  • Centralized oil and grease lubrication systems
  • Lubrication best practices and contamination control
  • Equipment troubleshooting and failure analysis
  • Mechanical drawings and equipment specifications
  • Equipment reliability and maintainability improvement

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with SAP.
  • Previous experience in steel manufacturing or hot rolling.
  • Experience leading Continuous Improvement initiatives.
  • Experience supporting major maintenance outages in a heavy industrial environment.
  • Experience leading or supporting capital improvement projects, including technical evaluations, equipment modifications, and implementation.
  • Knowledge of Predictive Maintenance (PdM) technologies, including:
    • Vibration analysis
    • Thermography
    • Ultrasound
    • Oil analysis
    • Other predictive maintenance technologies
